Chinese scientists unveil bone glue that repairs fractures in minutes

Beijing: Chinese researchers have announced the development of a medical bone glue capable of repairing fractures and shattered bone fragments in as little as three minutes, a breakthrough long considered the “holy grail” of orthopaedic medicine.

According to Global Times, the adhesive, named “Bone-02,” was unveiled on September 10 by a team in Zhejiang Province. Dr Lin Xianfeng, associate chief orthopaedic surgeon at Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital and the project’s lead, said the inspiration came from observing oysters attaching themselves to underwater structures.

According to Lin, the glue achieves fixation within two to three minutes, even in blood-rich environments. It is naturally absorbed by the body as the bone heals and eliminates the need for surgical removal.

Laboratory and clinical trials have reportedly demonstrated both safety and efficacy. In one case, fractures were stabilized in under 180 seconds which is far quicker than conventional procedures that often require steel plates and screws. State media reported that more than 150 patients have already undergone successful treatment using the adhesive.

The product also showed strong mechanical performance, with glued bones able to withstand over 400 pounds of force, a shear strength of 0.5 MPa, and a compressive strength of about 10 MPa. Researchers say this could eventually replace metal implants, reducing the risk of infections and complications.

While bone cements and fillers are already in use, none offer true adhesive properties.
